• Myths and Heroes

A myth is a story that may or may not be true. There may not be records or other proof that they happened, but at least some parts of myths may be true. Some myths may have started as ‘true’ stories but as people re-told them some parts may have been changed by mistake, or to make them more interesting. All cultures have myths and this mythology has been developed over time. Mythology includes the legends of our history, our religions, stories of how the world was created, and our heroes. These stories have great symbolic power, and this may be a major reason why they survive as long as they do, sometimes for thousands of years.

A hero is a person who is admired for their courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. It can be the main character in a book or a film or a person with superhuman qualities. It can also be a modern-day hero, a person who has performed a heroic act or simply our own personal hero, our role model, who we look up to. Or in the words of Maya Angelou ‘A hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people’.

    Examples can be:

    – a patriotic or national hero (sportsman, politician, human rights defender…..)

    – a fictitious hero (superhero or film star)

    – an icon or role model (fashion, tv, music)

    – a defender of common values

    – unknown heroes (war heroes, firemen, rescue workers, charity workers….)

    – our own personal hero (member of the family who you look up to)

The magazine is a special edition of TIME 100.  Is refers to a 100 builders and titans since the 40s in the sub-title they are called 'The most influential business genuises of the century.'

We can see the silhouette of men working in the middle of the picture.  This shows us that without the help of many unknown workers, these men would not have accomplished what they have today.

The fact that they are at the top of the image may be considered to be a sign of their success/them being successful and reaching the top.  In fact they could be considered of having realized the American Dream 'fram rags to riches'.

The magazine chose only five men to represent this myth and they are not all American.  They have in common their fight and victories to develop world renowned industries.

HENRY FORD is a pionner of the automobile industry making cars available to the common man.  He dad serveral failures but believed in this vision of manufacturing cars faster and cheaper and was the inventor of the assembly line.

WALT DISNEY - I dont think I need to mention all the amusement parks that have been built around the world or even Disney land but he started out by simply drawing cartoons.

AKIO MORITA was born in Japan and founded what was to become SONY CORPORATION.

SAM Walton was  the founder of Walmart and American superstore.

BILL GATES is best known as the founder of Microsoft Corporation a multinational technological company.

The word TIME is written using nuts and bolts which an refer to the difficulties encourntered along the way.

In order to understand this notion I will look at it in terms of Steve Jobs Stanford commencement Speech.

A Commencement speech is when a commencement speaker adresses university graduates and their families at a graduating ceremony.  It is a speech tat is given to influence the listeners to aspire to do the best they can in any given circumstances.  They are very common in the United sStates and the speech i will look at was given by Steve Jobs.

Why did I chose Steve Jobs?  Because although he has had many public controversies in his life, he is also considered to be successful , courageous and a visionary and he has a skill to be able to communicate with others.

Already at the opening of the speech he captures his audience by saying that he is honored to be there while we can imagine at the same time that the graduates are honored to hear hoim speak.
